And what a season for the men’s hair! Brad didn’t just win for his acting, did he?

Denis Robinson from Ruffians Liberty has been busy putting together the ultimate guide of how to achieve the best trophy-worthy hair of 2020.

The Glorious Brad

What sort of hair do you need to get Brad Pitt’s look? “Well, actually, it’s pretty achievable for anyone with fine to medium density, straight or wavy hair,” affirms Denis. “Obviously you need a little bit of length, but talk to your barber about growing it out and styling the in-between stages, and when you get there, you need a mid-length, round-layer cut. Essentially we will be cutting the layers in the hair to the same length, but in a curved manner, to remove any angles or heavy weight distribution.

Styling at home couldn’t be easier. After shampooing and conditioning (longer hair needs the conditioner to keep the hair healthy and strong, so don’t neglect this part), towel-dry and spritz the roots with Ruffians’ Marine Salt Spray, for that bit of texture and grit. Longer styles sit better when the hair is not so fresh and silky; the salt spray nicely takes the edge off.

Blow-dry until the hair is nearly dry, concentrating on the root area. Leave the mid-lengths and ends slightly damp, to avoid too much volume. Then warm some Ruffians Matt Clay in the palms of your hands and work the product through, sweeping your hands from front to back, distributing it equally.”

Denis’ final tip? “For a more relaxed, daytime look, give your head a vigorous shake to loosen it up. If you want a slicker look for a smart night out, add more clay if you need it and comb through. We developed our clay to have an extra flexibility and softness, whilst still keeping structure, and it won’t become hard and flaky like clays of the past.”

Seriously Joaquin

It’s all about gravitas for Joaquin Phoenix; for him it’s not a stage as much as a platform, and he looks the part. Firstly, the cut: “You’ll need some natural movement in your hair to really achieve this mussed up look, and a barber who’s a scissor maestro – clippers down for this!” orders Denis. “Ask for a graduated mid-length layer, point cut to maximise the natural movement. Slightly shorter around the ears and nape, building up to heavier lengths on top, and elongated towards the front.”

Maintaining this look is pretty easy. “Wash and condition, then rub a little of Ruffians Styling Paste into towel-dried hair. Either let it dry naturally or encourage the curls with your diffuser attachment. When dry, run your hands through it softly to loosen up.”

But Denis says don’t forget to pay attention to the beard. “It’s important to keep the beard neat to balance out the softness of the hair and ensure you look polished. A number 4 guard all over for this, and clean the neck line in an inverted pyramid, to give a more defined jawline. Clean the loose hairs above the beard line on the cheeks by taking the guard off and flicking upwards. You can achieve the sharper line by using a razor.

The facial hair needs TLC just as much as the hair on your head. After showering, while the beard is still damp, use some Ruffians Argan Beard Oil and rub it through the hair and massage it down onto the skin underneath. The argan oil will moisturise and nourish the hair, the acidic value in the citrus extracts will help exfoliate away the dead skin cells, and the tea tree will work as a salve to counteract any irritation that can occur with the build up of sebum near the skin. (It’s also really good at calming inflamed areas if you’ve taken a blade to carry out line ups).”

Waves of Adam

Adam Driver’s thick, glossy waves perfectly capture that arty yet masculine vibe, to love and to cherish no matter the marriage story.

“This look is best suited to medium to thick hair, and can work on loose curls too,” says Denis. “Ask your barber to give you a mid-length round layer. The key with a layer cut like this is the even distribution of weight all over the head, and Adam’s scissor expert has kept it perfectly balanced.

Depending on how thick and bouncy your hair is, you could leave it loose and dry natural, or flatten it with a heavier product like the Ruffians Matt Clay once dry. For a slightly more retro look, you can blow-dry it smooth and flat with a paddle brush.”

Choi Woo-Shik – the game-changer

To say we love Choi Woo-Shik’s hair is an understatement. “It’s a relief to see such a versatile, modern cut after all the long slick-backs,” enthuses Denis. “There’s a disconnection happening but a subtle one, just to remove some bulk around the back and sides and prevent it turning into a bowl cut. The undercut is tapered from the ear up to the curvature of the head. The taper is very shallow, so as to debulk the hair at the widest part of the head. The top is then point cut in a round layer on top, so the weight distributes evenly over the top of the head.

This cut works well on a very full head of hair, either straight or with a wave. You can have a lot of fun styling, as every direction will give you a vastly different look. You can go from pomp to beatnik depending on whether you dry it flat or push it back. Have fun and experiment!

A good go-to would be the Ruffians Marine Salt Spray on damp hair, followed by the Ruffians Matt Clay for finishing. For more texture, shake it up and ruffle with your fingers, for a smoother look run a brush through your hair to keep it sleek.”

He’s sky-rocketed in his career, he’s unafraid to take on the high fashion stakes, and he wins, in no small part, thanks to his HAIR. (We would think that, but it’s true!)

Maxwell from Ruffians Shoreditch gives us the lowdown on how to get Timothée’s look.

“This style is great for hair with some body, and a natural curl or wave. But first, you’re going to need some length. If you’ve been used to having your hair shorter it may take a couple or more cuts to get to the desired look. We’re seeing more and more requests for this, with the likes of Timothée and Adam Driver setting the trend for glossy, longer waves. Hang in there and take the journey with your barber – they can provide styling tips that will ensure you look great at all the in-between stages.

When you reach the desired length, ask for an all-over scissor cut, keeping length on the top and slightly tapering in the sides for graduated precision.”

“Once you’ve got the cut, the styling options are so varied,” enthuses Maxwell. “For a relaxed, daytime vibe, spritz in some Ruffians Marine Salt Spray and leave to dry naturally. For a slicker look, rub a pea-sized amount of the Ruffians Styling Paste in your hands and run through from front to back when almost dry.

For full, bouncy waves, run a generous dollop of our Hair Cream into damp hair and then gently diffuse with a hair dryer. When the hair is 90% dry, down tools, and run your fingers through to open up the waves.”

All you have to do now is pick up that trophy.

Enter the popular men’s hair trend, the textured crop.

ruffians-textured-crop-2019-a

Reason It’s Trending

This super-low maintenance crop is not only easy on the eye, it’s easy on time and takes little to no effort to make it look amazing. It’s absolutely everywhere right now, with everyone from David Beckham to Jake Gyllenhaal sporting this super chic style.

What To Ask The Barber For

For the Ryan Reynolds version you want a scissor-over-comb crop on the sides with a point-cut rounded layer on top; scissor-over-comb gives a softer more natural finish than clippers.

Alternatively, if you’re addicted to super short on the back and sides, ask your barber for the usual fade around the back. Get them to texturise the top by cutting super short, following the shape of the head using a point cutting technique. Ask them to avoid thinning scissors as it will make the hair too fluffy.

How To Style It

As mentioned, it’s pretty low maintenance but also holds its shape as it grows out. At its shortest there’s no need for products. This is good for the hair, giving it a break and allowing it and the scalp to breathe.

When it begins to get longer and therefore fluffier, products will certainly help you define the look. Wash the hair with Ruffians Original Shampoo. Towel dry the hair until 80% dry and spray a generous amount of Ruffians Marine Spray over the entirety of the hair. Blow dry, using your fingers to add texture and break up the hair. When the hair is thoroughly dry, take a pea size amount of our all rounder, Ruffians Matt Clay. Rub vigorously between the palm of your hand to warm and then rub evenly throughout the hair. Pat the hair gently to flatten and shape, or pinch with your fingers for more definition.

For a really natural look, wash with Ruffians Original Shampoo and leave to dry naturally. If you want more volume use Ruffians Hair Powder. Rather than sprinkling into the hair, tap a little amount into the palm of your hands. Rub together and then rub over the surface of the hair, this will disturb the texture and enhance the haircut.

Our new Ruffians product range is available to purchase from all five of our shops, or can be bought from our online store. Want to let the experts sort your hair and give you the lowdown on the best products for styling it? Book an appointment now.

There’s brand new members of the family, such as our Hair Cream and Hair Powder as well as revised versions of our ever popular Matt Clay and Styling Paste. One of our favourite new products is the brand new Ruffians Marine Salt Spray and we truly believe that this is the sea-salt spray everyone has been waiting for!

Our Marine Salt Spray provides a firm, flexible hold with a matt finish. Organic seaweed extracts help protect hair against sun damage and toxins. The seaweed extracts also contain minerals, vitamins and amino acids, promoting healthy hair.

We’ve put together a guide to getting the very most out of the brand new Ruffians Marine Salt Spray.

What makes Ruffians Marine Salt Spray so good?

Ruffians Marine Salt Spray is exactly that: a spray formula with marine salt and additional organic seaweed minerals.

This product will add texture and body without leaving your hair feeling sticky, greasy, shiny or hard. Not only that, but the seaweed extracts included contain minerals, vitamins and amino acids that will help protect the hair from sun damage and toxins- promoting healthy hair!

Due to its versatility, Ruffians Marine Salt Spray works perfectly with various hair types to both prep (with or without a hair dryer) and style. It’s the product to reach for when you want your hair to look perfectly undone.

FOR FINE HAIR our Marine Salt Spray will add grip and texture to fine and flyaway hair. It’s a great treatment to boost fine and limp hair before using your usual styling product. It works perfectly before our Styling Paste or Matt Clay.

FOR THICK HAIR our Marine Salt Spray is also great for thick hair. It will add texture, body and volume without weighing the hair down. It’s a really great option for guys who want to style their hair but don’t want it to look like it has any product in it.

How should I use it?

STYLING WITHOUT A HAIRDRYER

This technique is great for relaxed and loose styles. Be aware, it will not hold hair up into high styles like a quiff or pompadour.

STEP 1 Wash your hair with Ruffians Original Shampoo and then towel dry.

STEP 2 Spray 4-5 pumps of Ruffians Marine Spray into your hair, using your hands, work it through root to tip.

STEP 3 Style your hair with your hands or for a sleeker look use a comb/ brush, leaving your hair to dry naturally.

STYLING WITH A HAIRDRYER

A hair dryer will speed up the process and allow you to work more volume into your hair.

STEP 1 Wash your hair with Ruffians Original Shampoo and then towel dry.

STEP 2 Spray 4-5 pumps of Ruffians Marine Spray into your hair, using your hands, work it through root to tip.

STEP 3 Set your hair dryer to a medium heat and fast speed. Starting at the crown, work your hands through your hair, directing it in the direction you want to set it in. Stop using your hair dryer as soon as your hair is dry.

Finish by using your favourite Ruffians styling product (Ruffians Styling Paste or Ruffians Matt Clay) to add structure and definition .

Barber Tips

  • If you want height and lift at the fringe, direct the heat at the roots, lifting the hair with your fingers. Once the hair is in the desired shape, freeze in place using the cool button on the hair dryer.

  • If you’re looking to add even more texture and volume to your look- also use our Hair Powder once the hair is completely dry, then apply our Matt Clay or Styling Paste.

Ruffians Marine Salt Spray is available to purchase from all five of our shops, or can be bought from our online store. Want to let the experts sort your hair and give you the lowdown on the best products for styling it? Book an appointment now.

Get the Look: Festive Season 2019 https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/get-the-look-festive-season-2019/ https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/get-the-look-festive-season-2019/#respond Wed, 04 Dec 2019 17:57:57 +0000 https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/?p=4400 The festive season is upon us! Presents need to be bought and wrapped, parties need to be attended and your hair needs to look on point. Here at Ruffians, we aim to have you looking good all year round and our barbers have put together a style guide to help you look your best this Christmas and New Year!

You’re joking…

What did the bald guy say when he got a comb for Christmas?

“I’ll never PART with it!”

Why did Frosty not have to go to the barbers?

Because he had ‘sNOw hair’!

Why did Santa’s hair look such a mess on Christmas morning?

Because of the RAIN-deer!

Ok, ok, no more Chritsmas cracker jokes! Let’s get to the point, this is your Get the Look: Festive Season 2019. Whether it’s the office Christmas party or New Years Eve fireworks, we have the top tips for getting your hair looking festively-good for the upcoming party season!

We’ve asked one of our newest barbers Keri at Ruffians Soho-Liberty to give us the lowdown on three key hair looks that will truly make you stand out from the crowd.

Meticulously Messy

If you’re going for the messy but stylish look this Christmas, here’s how to do it. Barber Keri suggests, this is a look for all- a messy textured look that works on any hair length.

Wash the hair with Ruffians Original Shampoo and towel dry until damp to the touch. Spray a healthy amount (6 or more squirts) of Ruffians Marine Spray over the damp hair- working it into the roots with your fingers.

Keri explains, for the best results, blow dry roughly in all directions. This isn’t a neat style, go wild with your hairdryer, breaking the hair up with your fingers.

The Ruffians Marine Spray will give a great texture, creating that meticulously messy look. To finish the style, use Ruffians Hair Powder to add density and hold. Tap the powder throughout the hair, close to the roots. The amount you use will depend on the hold you want to achieve- the more you use, the stronger the hold.

Now go crazy- ruffle the hair in all directions, activating the Ruffians Hair Powder and creating that messy textured look.

Keri adds, if your hair is on the fluffy or dry side, take a peas-sized amount of Ruffians Matt Clay in the palm of your hand. Vigorously warm the clay between your hands and then rub through the hair from root to tip, break the hair up with your fingers, pinching it into the desired look. She explains that the clay will take the fluffy edge off the look, adding more definition.

Subtly Suave

Fancy a sleeker, more sophisticated look this winter? Keri has the how to for this look.

This is a subtly suave look, best for mid length, longer hair. Firstly, wash the hair with Ruffians Original Shampoo and condition with Ruffians Original Conditioner

Towel dry the hair. Take your Ruffians Hair Cream and portion a pea-sized amount into your palm. Rub the cream between your hands and work it thoroughly through the hair, applying it from the roots to the ends.

Now, Keri says you have two options, if you’re in a rush, brush/ comb the hair into the desired shape- parting the hair on the side of your preference and leave the hair to dry naturally. If you have time to spare, get the hairdryer out, directing the hair on the sides and top backwards, away from the face. Once dry, take a fingertip worth of Ruffian Styling Paste rubbing it vigorously between the palms of your hands. Really work the product throughout the hair, again working it from the root to the tip.

Finally, for a sleeker look, use a brush/ comb to style as desired. For a more natural look, push and shape with your hands and fingers. To fix into place, finish with a strong hold hairspray, to fix into place!

Sickeningly Slick

Our barber says, you can achieve this style with most lengths of hair, longer hair will obviously push back easier than shorter lengths.

Wash the hair with Ruffians Original Shampoo and then lightly towel dry, leaving the hair damp. Keri suggests, this is a wet look so product will be added to the hair while it is wet. Ruffians Styling Paste can be used, taking a fingertip amount and working it between the palms of the hands. Rub the product thoroughly through the damp hair, pushing it backwards with your fingers, brush or comb. Using your fingers will give you a natural texture, whereas the brush or comb will give a sleeker maintained hold.

The Ruffians product range is available to purchase from all five of our shops, or can be bought from our online store. Want to let the experts sort your hair and give you the lowdown on the best products for styling it? Book an appointment now.

A new generation of hair clay https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/ruffians-matt-clay-hair-product/ https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/ruffians-matt-clay-hair-product/#respond Tue, 03 Dec 2019 12:23:24 +0000 https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/?p=4381 It’s a good time of year to invest in a hair clay. There’s something about winter that makes one look to earthy things of substance, to natural protectors against the harsh elements – and the rough texture of a clay in your hands feels satisfyingly enduring.

In the old days if you bought a matt clay, it tended to be pretty rigid stuff – hard to get out of the tub, clumpy, and prone to flaking over all your clothes after a few hours. Not so any more. Our new Matt Clay is at the forefront of formulations out there that have a built-in flexibility, yet without losing any of the strength and structure you would expect from a clay.

How does it work?

The kaolin clay binds to the hair by absorbing the sebum, clinging to the hair shaft, that’s emitted from the scalp. This reduces shine and absorbs light, giving the impression of fullness, body and thickness, and ensures your hold. Meanwhile, the active ingredients work to benefit the hair – natural candelilla and olive waxes nourish, thicken and condition, and organic seaweed extracts protect against daily pollutants and UV damage.

How to use it

We spoke to Robyn from our Edinburgh store about how to get the best out of the Ruffians Matt Clay.

“The Ruffians Matt Clay is a really versatile clay, with enough flexibility in it to re-shape and style throughout the day,” explains Robyn. “It can create a bold structured pomp or a textured choppy crop, on both short or medium length hair. But for best results, use in dry hair.”

STEP 1 Towel-dry hair after washing and use a hairdryer to blast over the entirety of the hair until it is 80% dry.

STEP 2 Set a hairdryer to medium heat and start working in circular motions at the crown. This will allow the crown to sit naturally without any parts sticking up. Once the crown is dry, work on the sides and back, directing the nozzle in the direction of the hair growth – from the crown to your neck at the back and from the crown to the ears/face on the sides. Continue to dry the top in the direction of hair growth, breaking the hair with hands to allow the airflow.

STEP 3 Once completely dry, take a pea sized amount of Ruffians Matt Clay and rub together in the palm of your hands. Work the product through the entirety of your hair – making sure you get an even distribution from front to back. Remember that less is more, start with a small amount of clay and add more if needed.

For maximum texture and a messier look, let the product do the styling for you. If you wanted the style a little sleeker, use a brush or comb.

BARBER’S TIP

If you’re looking to add more texture to your look, Robyn suggests using the Ruffians Marine Spray in towel-dried hair before blow drying, and then apply the Ruffians Matt Clay as above.

Ruffians Matt Clay is available to purchase from all five of our shops, or can be bought from our online store.

Ruffians Hairstyle Guide: The Popular Pomp https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/ruffians-hairstyle-guide-the-popular-pomp/ https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/ruffians-hairstyle-guide-the-popular-pomp/#respond Wed, 27 Nov 2019 15:25:12 +0000 https://yourbarbershopguide.pics/?p=4141 At its simplest, the pomp or pompadour is a style that calls for hair to be swept up and back over the head. The sides and back are combed neatly and kept close to the head while a quiff is constructed using the longer hair at the front.

If that sounds complicated, it’s not. The pompadour is a lot more versatile than you might first think. There are so many variations on the style that it can be cut, styled and altered to suit men of all ages, tastes and profession.

Here, you’ll find a step-by-step expert guide to everything you need to know about the Popular Pomp and how to achieve the best finish.

What is the “Popular Pomp”?

The Popular Pomp is the modern take on a classic. This style is defined by a clear contrast between the shortness of the hair at the sides and back compared to the length of the hair on the top.

Unlike a classic pomp, which is achieved with scissor-cut hair, the modern variation requires your hair at the sides and back be clippered either to a uniform length (usually a grade four or lower) or graduated, i.e. faded, from very short at the hairline at the sides and back to slightly longer towards the crown.

Less work than the classic, the modern pompadour does not require a lot of combing and styling at the sides and back, so it’s ideal if slightly pinched for time.

How To Style it

Whether you want a slick, tightly sculpted pompadour or one that’s loose enough to run your hands through, the basic styling method is the same.

STEP 1 First, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner to ensure it is completely free of excess oil, dirt and product residue.

STEP 2 Lightly towel dry the hair. Take a small amount of Ruffians Hair Cream into your palm, rub between your hands and apply evenly throughout the damp hair. Then, with a round brush and hair dryer, blow dry the hair backwards from your forehead and temples towards the back of your head, each time moving along the full shaft of the hair from root to tip.

STEP 3 Next, take a pea-sized amount of Ruffians Styling Paste. Thoroughly rub it between the palms of your hands to warm before running it through your hair. Make sure you apply it evenly, from the root to the tip. Remember, start with a small amount of Ruffians Styling Paste, you can always add more if required.

STEP 4 Resume brushing, using the technique outlined in step two. As you brush with one hand, use the other to gently guide the hair you’ve just brushed.

STEP 5 Next, shape the hair as desired. If you desire more height or volume, use the palm of your hand to push the fringe/ quiff forward.

Once happy with the shape of your pompadour and depending on your desired finish, spray with a generous amount of strong-hold hairspray to help keep everything in place.

Remember, barbers and stylists have practised these techniques for years. Don’t panic if it takes you a couple of attempts before you get the perfect look!

There’s brand new members of the family, such as our Marine Spray and Hair Powder, but we also took the opportunity to look afresh at our old products and make some key enhancements. Our Styling Paste has always been one of our most versatile and popular hair products and now it’s even better!

We knew our barbers and clients already loved this product for its qualities and functions, we just wanted to replace some of the old ingredients to provide a product that was better for both your hair and the environment. Here, Ruffians Soho-Liberty‘s star barber Matthew Heckel provides a guide to getting the very most out of the new and improved Ruffians Styling Paste.

What makes Ruffians Styling Paste so good?

Made from candelilla plant wax, lanolin and antioxidant rich herbal hops, our styling paste’s concentrated conditioning agents and natural waxes create texture, moisturise and condition the hair and provide a natural shine.Easy to distribute throughout the hair, this product helps you to mould and shape your hair into your desired style. Suitable for both short and long hair lengths, the Ruffians Styling Paste should be your go-to for looking suave, wherever you may be!

How should I use it?

Ruffians Styling Paste works wonders for textured and effortless looks – think David Beckham’s textured quiff or a beachy surfer look. With our styling paste, the lightweight and malleable nature of it means that you can apply it to your hair and style one way and then change it up throughout the day.

STEP 1 Depending on what look you’re going for – our paste can be applied to wet or dry hair. Apply to dry hair for a messy, textured but styled look and apply to wet hair for a more slicked back style.

STEP 2 Towel dry hair to get rid of most of the moisture and use a hairdryer to blast over the entirety of the hair. Once the hair is 80% dry, use a brush and nozzle on the hairdryer to blow dry the hair backwards, ensuring that the cuticles lay flat.

STEP 3 Take a pea sized amount and rub together in the palm of your hands. Work the product through the entirety of your hair – making sure you get an even distribution from front to back.

STEP 4 For maximum texture and a messier look, let the product do the styling for you, just use your fingers to get your desired part and to decide where you want the hair to sit.

Barber tips

  • For a sleeker, more controlled look – use a little Ruffians Hair Cream in towel dried hair before blow drying, using a brush or comb to smooth and shape the hair. Then apply the Ruffians Styling Paste, again using a brush or comb to shape the final look.

We asked the teams at all of our shops to tell us which styles and trends they think will be big for the AW19 season.

The Mod-inspired mop

First up is Ruffians Marylebone where Manager and star barber Luke Davies’ prediction for the season ahead is that the mod-inspired mop is set for a long overdue return to men’s hair fashion.

With its heritage set in the 60s and after a reboot during the Britpop era, it’s been a while since we have seen these mod-ish shapes coming back in to the mainstream.

What to ask the barber for

So, what should you be talking to your barber about to get this look? Essentially, it’s a scissor taper from the nape with a steep angle to the crown. The crown is pretty short and choppy then elongated towards the forehead and heavy distressed fringe chopped in around brow level or just above for the brave.

Lots of texture is the key here. Point cut, texturised or even razor cut. This means the hair is tailored perfectly to your hair type, face shape and hair density. A truly bespoke look.

How to style it

This one needs a little more attention at home. After washing apply some thickening salt spray over the surface and dry flat pointing the dryer forward and wrapping it around the shape of your head. No need to try and get extra volume, the texturing will give you movement.

Style with a smidge of matt wax to enhance the texture and give you soft control.

Here’s a nice recent example on the Ruffians Instagram:
